Glaciologists and disaster relief coordinators have completed the installation of fourteen autonomous seismic monitoring stations overlooking critical meltwater lakes in the Pamir Mountains.

Rapid summer thawing has caused natural moraine dams to weaken, increasing the risk of sudden glacial lake outburst floods that could inundate downstream agricultural villages.

The telemetry array communicates via low-Earth orbit satellite links, giving emergency civil defense teams up to ninety minutes of advance evacuation warning.

Similar systems are being evaluated for installation in the Andes and Himalayas under an international disaster risk reduction grant.
