Sports scientists question physiological efficacy of prolonged simulated hypoxia training

A comprehensive three-year study published by sports medicine researchers in London has cast serious doubt on the performance benefits of artificial hypoxic sleep chambers for endurance athletes.

Tracking sixty competitive middle-distance and marathon runners, the researchers found that while simulated altitude stimulated mild erythropoietin production, the corresponding disruption to deep-stage sleep resulted in chronic muscle recovery deficits.

Athletes training at natural high-altitude mountain camps showed significantly higher VO2 max improvements and lower systemic inflammation markers than those using artificial nitrogen tents.
