City council members voted 8–4 on Thursday to authorize a $520 million tax-increment financing package to install a climate-controlled retractable roof on the city's central arena.

Proponents argued that weatherproofing the 62,000-seat stadium would allow the city to host major international concert tours and off-season esports tournaments throughout the winter months.

However, municipal budget analysts warned that the projected $35 million annual debt service could divert revenue from regional school renovation programs if tourist tax yields stagnate.

Construction is scheduled to commence at the conclusion of the current athletic season in May.
